Pack Your Sleeping Bag and Send Yourself to Camp
Yes, I did say sleeping bag. And yes, I really mean “send yourself to camp.” Ginny and I did it this spring and rediscovered the pleasures of childhood “away camp” that’s now tailored to a gals-only environment. We went for a re-energizing weekend at Camp GetAway in the San Bernardino Mountains outside L.A. and San Diego.
It’s a weekend retreat — gals only!
Camp GetAway is held at a picturesque camp complete with a main lodge/gathering place, individual cabins with bunks and actual indoor plumbing, lots of pine trees, hiking trails and a great lake. It’s a pretty big camp, a nice one to which people send their kids during the rest of the season.
Swimming, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, arts and crafts, classes, discussion groups, home-cooked meals by the camp’s excellent kitchen staff, and lots of time for gabbing with new friends. It’s a whole weekend devoted to you — but wait, I’ll tell you about a few more of the camp delights in my next post.
You’re Not Limited by Age
One of the beauties of this weekend camp experience for women is that age is not a barrier to the fun. On our weekend, ages ranged from mid-twenties to close to 70. Everyone was cordial and enjoyed the activities together like all were old pals. Some women came with a friend or two or three, others came alone. It’s the kind of place you can be comfortable in traveling solo. There was even a group of military wives from Camp Pendleton who added much to the lively atmosphere.
Next: Tie-dye, hiking and massages
