Brooklyn’s Williamsburg Coming Alive as a New Greenwich Village
I’d heard about Williamsburg, a neighborhood in Brooklyn. That it is pretty much the way Greenwich Village was 30 years ago or more. Young fashion designers, up-and-coming artists and musicians, less expensive living and the place to meet other artsy up-and-comers.
Finding Williamsburg.
The subway is the best, most efficient method of transportation in NYC. From our Central Park West hotel on 77th and Broadway, we walked a few
blocks east to the subway under Central Park West that would take us south to 14th Street where we transferred to the “L” train that went into Brooklyn. An easy
change of trains got us there for just $2. What a deal. We got off at Bedford for the Williamsburg neighborhood.
You could see lots of improvements being made around the area, new construction, building upgrades, more retail shops opening.
I was looking for shops featuring “indie” designers (independent designers)who were trying to make their way into the fashion industry. Saw a number of shops and cafes. Jumelle, which was on my list to visit, was closed both times we stopped by.
But we did stop into Brooklyn Industries, a shop filled with unique, locally designed clothing for men and women. Brooklyn Industries, we learned, has been around about 10 years. Two local designers have expanded their business to several stores around Brooklyn and Manhattan. I liked their clothing. Bought a unique short jacket. Quite a few to choose from in that shop. The store clerk was friendly and helpful. Gave us a lot of tips on where to find the fun stuff in Williamsburg. Even gave us a guidebook and mapped out our destinations.

TIPS:
Get the Brooklyn Guidebook. Here’s a link to an online version of the guidebook given to us at Brooklyn Industries. Very helpful for finding all the right stuff in the neighborhood.
