Tavern on the Green a Visual Delight
Since Karen and I were touring Central Park, we thought we might as well stay for dinner at Tavern on the Green. It’s located in the southwestern corner of the park, near Columbus Circle. In fact, it was walking distance from our Upper West Side hotel. A delightful stroll after dinner.
While it is known as an expensive restaurant, we didn’t find it much different than any fine dining place in New York.
The food was good, but not as exceptional as we had anticipated. I ordered Caramalized Onion Soup ($13) — just okay. Classic Crab Cake was not as good I had have had elsewhere. Instead of nice sweet lump crab, it was shredded crab. The veal chop ($36)was large and very good. But the biggest treat of the meal — the very best thing that absolutely delighted us — was the Polenta made with mascarpone cheese that accompanied the veal chop. Oh my gosh — we have got to find that recipe! Wine was $10.50-$12/glass on average.
The Ambiance Was The Best
Besides the unbelievably delicious polenta with mascarpone cheese, the visual setting at Tavern on the Green was worth the visit. Extraordinary garden dining. Six spectacular indoor dining rooms and three garden areas. We sat in the garden. One was called the Crystal Pavilion — all glass walls looking out into the garden area and filled inside with glass chandeliers. Elegant. Romantic. Hundreds of unique lanterns danced in the breezes in the trees. White garden chairs and tables. Lush landscaping and flowers were everywhere. It’s definitely worth seeing — if only for a cup of tea and a dessert while you’re in NYC!
TIPS:
Tavern on the Green serves brunch, lunch, pre-theater dinner and regular dinner. I believe you can also stop in for a drink or dessert. Here are the menus.
